That's a very interesting subject...
(I'm no doctor, so you can't officially go by this definition, nor am I able to diagnose, but I can philosophically speak of 'levels' beyond the thought-system 'schizophrenia' exists on)
Schizophrenia is mental disorder which is an effect of a Pineal Gland (Third Eye) that is misaligned or damaged. This is the -physical side- ...the more 'symptom' or effect of the energy being aligned.
While medical science does not know the problem of schizophrenia, essentially, the 'problem' exists on a higher level of mind, or soul. Perhaps this individual was ignoring their Spiritual aspect and adapted strange mental patterns in an acute and intricate series of life events that accumulated as the 'problem' Another reason, may be 'appear' to be genetic, but it seems to me that the offspring 'learned' the mental-energy pattern/behavior and integrated it into their energy. No you can't 'catch' mental disorders, but if you aren't taking care of your own mental health, it can be easy to seem like you can.
In any event, due to the nature of schizophrenia, mistrust and paranoia will prevent any placebos from working. (they don't even trust their non-placebo medication) Schizophrenics are very in-tune with the energy world, though it is totally distorted. Some shamans would enter trances that would be similar to schizophrenic states and return, to better understand themselves.
(Understanding Sanity, by delving into the Insane, if you will)
While it is not recommended that a schizophrenic practice Qi Gong by themselves, this actually seems to be of the most helpful for them. They understand energy very well, they know that energy cannot deceive them(even though energy-states may be able to) they also are comforted by the fact that they don't have to trust 'outside' sources, they can practice and go within. It is recommended that someone with schizophrenia (who wishes to practice QiGong) becomes very clear about their intentions, what they want to get out of it, etc. (are they doing it 'just for power' or are they sincerely/actively working on their conditions?)
It is *highly recommended* that a suitable Master be found and help them in their training/as well as clearing their energy state. For in training, the problems can -intensify- as they are brought before the mind and the mind shines them away. Obviously for the mentally deranged, this is not an easy endeavor when they 'shut down' disassociate or disconnect when the problems arise before the mind.
QiGong heals from the 'bottom' and up, so they must also be very patient and diligently practice as they start at the base of the spine and work towards the brain. Typically, the body is healed first, then the emotions, mind and soul, as the 'energy pyramid' is built upwards with a very sound foundation.
A while back before I started into meditation and QiGong I had a friend that has schizophrenia. I get a strong mix of emotional energies (depending on who I'm around and what the group's energy is like and intensify it--almost like I'm an amplifier. This used to be unstable, but I've managed to correct it.) Anyways, being near him was always a very strange experience (almost like dreaming). Anytime he was at a party, I would be drawn to hang out with him more than anyone else (now that I look back, it's almost as if I was compelled to guard his energy) when he would become upset that 'something else' is "there", I could feel it as well. He was very religious, and thought demons were after him because of it. I could actually get a glimpse of what he was looking at. Something 'other-worldly'... part of it was his own mental-construct, but it seems he was interacting with a 'collective consciousness' construct, which was looking back at him. As I observed this, it was like looking into a Hall of Mirrors. (not visually, but rather felt like it)
While it would be dualistic to try to use words to explain the difference (between 'his state' and my interpretation of 'what was there' in combination of my integration of his state of my state and what was there, etc, etc.) I can affirm that 'something else' was there...perhaps trying to help him understand his own state and teach him something about himself. Like he was looking at a window of Reality, but identified with it as 'something unreal' and therefor choose his own interpretation of it. Perhaps, schizophrenics aren't so crazy after all, yes, they might be 'imbalanced' in a sense but they are open to the energies of other dimensional viewpoints.
In any event, yeah, Qi Gong will definitely help them, but they have to want their sanity restored and be willing to take the steps. In addition, as much as they are opt to distrust others, they should definitely find a good teacher that they can trust. Many schizophrenics are very religious or spiritual, so if they cannot find a good teacher they can always call upon Spirit to Guide them, and perhaps a teacher will appear in their lives in a form that they can accept and when they are ready...
I hope that gives you a good 'viewpoint' on the subject.
