Thinking Visually

Would you like to visualize better than you do? Try this technique. It is one of 24 taught in Genius Code to help you think visually.

Afterimage Technique

You will need a partner or, if you are working on your own, an audio recorder. Most computers and mobile devices would record just fine for this. Speaking aloud to a listener involves additional sections of the brain, which can accelerate your progress.

Afterimages are leftover prints of light on the retina at the back of the eye. For 30 seconds, stare at a light, window, or part of the room that has a strong contrast. Do not use the sun or anything else very bright—20 to 40 watts of light is more than bright enough. When you look away from the light or close your eyes, you will see momentary afterimages. You may see a floating blob of light or color or perhaps a line. Describe aloud to your partner or into your recorder what you see in as much detail as possible. Continue describing as it changes color and shape.

Unreinforced afterimages last only a few seconds. Reinforced by attention and description, your afterimage can last minutes. We have found experimentally that some lasted as long as four hours. If yours fades after a few moments, recharge on the light and resume describing.

At some point while examining and describing your afterimages, you may notice other kinds of images, such as trace impressions or a momentary eye, face, landscape, vase, etc. As soon as you do, describe it. Describe in the present tense, as if you still see it, even if you caught only a momentary glimpse. With your attentive detailed sustained flow of description, more images will come.

Be persistent. Play with this technique for up to 20 minutes at a time.

Try this and leave a comment.

Thanks.

Pete

If Val is wondering why one would want to think visually, consider that it is vastly faster than thinking verbally.
We can think verbally about as fast as we can talk. When we allow visual thinking at the level of the unconscious, we are processing information at “brain speed”. It has been estimated that the human brain can process 4 quadrillion bits of information per second (4,000,000,000,000,000 bits/sec). Also, the brain can process multiple inputs simultaneously, something the conscious verbal thinking mode cannot. (multitasking is not possible at the conscious level).
Also, its much easier to bypass the “gatekeeper” – conscious critic or whatever you want to call it, when thinking visually, especially at the unconscious level.
Time distortion (dilation – contraction) seems to work well at unconscious & visual processing. Thus, one can experience hours, days, even weeks of “event time” in a few seconds of dreaming , daydreaming, or visualizing time.
There are more advantages to visual processing of information.I will mention just one more. The brain is (among other capabilities) “hardwired” for detecting movement within the visual field & also for sound. While we are born with the equipment for verbalization, we have to learn language. Further, when we are visualizing, we interfere with the visual stream if we try to decipher it verbally at the same time. This is because we can only consciously focus on one thing at a time.
