Sleep Now, Remember Later

Studies show over and over that deep sleep helps you remember facts, events, and procedures, and it helps you make connections between them. “Some sleep researchers believe that for every two hours we spend awake, the brain needs an hour of sleep to figure out what all these experiences mean,” Newsweek reported. So, when you cheat your sleep, you’re cheating your memory.

Medical Minute 11-10: Five Brain Boosters

A good memory can help you ace a test, finish the New York Times crossword puzzle, and figure out a complex computer program. But, can your lifestyle affect your ability to remember? Here are five ways to keep your memory sharp.

1) Reduce stress.
2) Get enough sleep.
3) Be social.
4) Try neurobics, such as brushing your teeth with your other hand.
5) Dance.

A story, which appeared on a Tennessee television station in November 2009, said, “Researchers who followed nearly 500 people for 21 years found that ballroom dancing was the most protective physical activity. It reduced dementia risk by 76%!”

Fitness: 33 reasons to cycle
#5:  Increase your brain power

Need your grey matter to sparkle? Then get pedaling. Researchers from Illinois University found that a five percent improvement in cardio-respiratory fitness from cycling led to an improvement of up to 15 percent in mental tests. That’s because cycling helps build new brain cells in the hippocampus – the region responsible for memory, which deteriorates from the age of 30.

We’ve always known that exercise improves your health. A recent study suggests that women who exercised intensively saw greater improvements in memory and verbal fluency than women who just did stretching.
